Training Offered in Voice Acting and Production

by Rich Roszel

In 1993, I was asked to help lead a workshop at the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Los Angeles.  The subject was "How to Choose a Digital Audio Workstation."

DAWs were still pretty new in the world of Christian media.  Not many of us had them. Christian Financial Concepts, my employer, did.  Since I had done the research in advance of our purchase, I became somewhat of an expert in the field.  This lends credence to the saying,

"In the land of the blind, a one-eyed man can be king."

Nonetheless, the workshop was very well received and I found myself answering a lot of questions.  Surprisingly, most questions were not about choosing a DAW.  Instead, I was asked about production technique and about how to use radio creatively.  As a result, I realized that there was a very great need for training in these areas.

Unfortunately, most non-profit stations were not able to send their key production staff to such a training event.  First, such an event didn't yet exist, and second, if such an event had existed, sending all the key players would have been cost prohibitive.  Thus was born the

"How-Did-They-Do-That?" Radio Production Workshop!

The nice thing was that you didn't have to travel to get to this two-day workshop.  It came to you (and still does).  For little more than the cost of sending one person off-site to a workshop, a station or group could bring me in to teach its entire staff on-site.

Today, training in the "How-Did-They-Do-That?" Radio Production Workshop focuses on
>>

Choosing the right blend of sound elements to tell the production story

>>  Using Foley to bring the sound stage to life
>>  Recording techniques
>>  Achieving "Suspension of Disbelief"

PLUS

>>

Creative writing for Radio

>>  Acting vs. Announcing

I also offer a shorter workshop that can be scaled to fit your needs.  It focuses more on these last two items as the foundation to great radio.  It's called

"Sparkling Audio Production with a #2 Pencil!"

It can be as short as two hours or as long as one day.  Incidentally, those longer versions include applications for your air talent and an abbreviated discussion of the production aspects of the "How-Did-They...?" workshop.

Many audio examples are used in both workshops

We're talking about audio production after all, so this workshop uses many examples from commercials to radio theatre dramas.  You'll hear how the various elements work individually and together to create the ultimate experience in the theatre of the mind.

Included in our stable of audio essentials is what has been called the worst example of scripting and production in the audio world.  What's really amazing is that it was produced that way on purpose!  Want to learn the rest of the story and hear this work of art that's so bad it's actually very funny?  Then book your workshop today!

You'll also get to explore the raw tracks from two of the most popular audio experiences produced in recent years.  We'll start with the voice tracks and rebuild the scenes one element at a time, learning how each element moves the story forward and compliments the others.
